Muffley's 3-pointer Gives Thiel Big Win Over Bethany

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel's Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa., Western Reserve Academy) drained a 3-pointer with five seconds on the clock to give the Thiel women's basketball team a come-from-behind 71-70 win over visiting Bethany on Monday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.

The Tomcats (2-9, 1-2) trailed 70-62 with just over two minutes to play until sophomore Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) started a 9-0 comeback run with a tip-in. Just 10 seconds later the lead was cut to four points as Jasmin Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa., Wilkinsburg) hit a jumper with 1:52 on the clock. Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio, St. Peter Chanel) set up Muffley's final shot with a defensive rebound and a bucket at the other end to make it a two-point game with 33 seconds remaining in regulation.

Five seconds was a little more time left on the clock than the Tomcats would have liked but the look Muffley had was too good to pass up. One of the top 3-point shooters on the team, Muffley received the pass with her back to the basket and turned around expecting a defender to be behind her. When she realized there wasn't she took advantage of the open shot and gave her team its second win of the season.

Bethany's Anne Wilson nearly put a dagger in an elated Tomcat team with her last second shot from well-behind the 3-point line. Wilson seemed to be hitting jumpers all night on her way to 17 points but her final shot rimmed out.

Jones, the lone senior on Thiel's roster, had the best game of her college career with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting and a 5-of-6 mark at the line. She hit her first seven shots and didn't miss until attempting a hurried shot at the first-half buzzer that nearly went in. Her 13 first-half points helped the Tomcats stay close at the break.

Thiel had a run in the first half similar to the one that helped it win the game in the second half. Trailing 36-24 with under two minutes to play, the Tomcats went on a 10-0 run highlighted by four points apiece from Muffley and Davis.

In addition to Jones, the Tomcats had three other players reach double-figures in scoring. Muffley and Davis tallied 14 points apiece while Barzak finished with 11. Barzak also recorded team-highs in assists with four and blocks with two. Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) was tops on the team with three steals.

Kayla Taormina and Katelynn Hacakthorn paced Bethany with 18 points apiece. The loss drops the Bison to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the PAC.

Thiel will attempt to even its conference record when it travels to play at Waynesburg on Thursday.
