WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Four pins helped Waynesburg roll to a 33-12 win over visiting Thiel on Friday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference wrestling match.
Corey Brown (Greenville, Pa., Reynolds),
Matt Lowry (Smithfield, Pa., Albert Gallatin) and
Andrew Riddle (Utica, Pa., Franklin) all won their bouts for the Tomcats in a losing effort.
Lowry may have had the most impressive win for either team in the match with an 18 second pin of freshman Sam Lombardo, who entered the match with a 21-4 record and as the reigning PAC Wrestler of the Week. The pin improves Lowry's record to 13-2 this season with victories in 11 of his last 12 matches. He received no recognition prior to the season, but the two-time conference champion has worked his way up to honorable mention status in the national rankings.
Brown controlled the tempo the entire match against previously unbeaten Rico Borz in a 9-4 win. He was the aggressor from start to finish and dominated in the neutral position.
After getting a late start to the season, Riddle is showing signs of getting back to the wrestler who won three conference titles before an injury derailed his senior season. Back after receiving a medical redshirt, he is now 6-3 after a 9-6 decision over Jake Linn.
Thiel will have one more PAC match this season, an away match against Washington & Jefferson on Friday. The three teams will all compete again two weeks from now at Waynesburg in the PAC Championships.
