Tomcats End 11-year Home Drought Against W&J

GREENVILLE, Pa. — A jumper by Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa., Western Reserve Academy) with seven seconds left in the game helped Thiel down visiting Washington & Jefferson 65-64, ending a home losing streak against the Presidents that spanned exactly 11 years.

Muffley has proven to be clutch all year long for the Tomcats and continued to be Saturday despite having one of her poorer shooting nights of the season. She was just 1 of 9 from the field before hitting the go-ahead jumper.

In three of Thiel's five wins, Muffley has played a pivotal role in the closing seconds. In addition to the shot against the Presidents, she also hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with less than five seconds to play in a win over Bethany, and drained two free throws with less than one second left on the clock in a two-point win over Geneva.

The Presidents trailed 63-62 before Courtney Walsh hit two foul shots, giving them a 64-63 lead with 17 seconds left in the game.

Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) had another great game in the win with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. She was 7 of 9 from the field and continued to rack up blocks, adding four more to her total. She scored 13 of her points in the second half.

Both teams had shooting struggles in the first half as W&J shot 27 percent from the field while Thiel was only slightly better at 30 percent. Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio, St. Peter Chanel), who scored seven of her 16 points in the first half, gave the Tomcats a two-point lead with a pair of free throws. The score remained 26-24 at the break as neither team scored after that, a span of 2:42.

The scoreless streak ended quickly for both teams in the second half. Barzak made a layup 18 seconds in for the Tomcats while Ashley Kirkpatrick countered with a 3-pointer 30 seconds later to cut Thiel's lead to 28-27.

Nina Gabrelcik (Niles, Ohio, Niles McKinley) once again was a weapon off the bench, doing what she does best for the Tomcats. She scored nine points on three 3-pointers in 15 minutes of action. Both of her first-half treys gave her team the lead while her 3-pointer in the second half put them up six points with 9:44 to play.

Thiel led by as much as nine points in the second half. Muffley made her first shot of the game, a 3-pointer to put the Tomcats up seven, and Barzak followed with two free throws to give them a 59-50 advantage with 4:31 on the clock.

Muffley finished with nine points. Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio, Trotwood-Madison) had eight points and added six assists and three steals.

The win gives the Tomcats back-to-back victories for the first time this season. They have won four of their last nine games and three of their last six after winning just once in the first 10 games of the season.

Thiel (5-14, 3-7) will play at Bethany on Wednesday.
