Tomcats Finish 3-1 at Mel Berry Duals

GREENVILLE, Pa. — The Thiel wrestling team posted a 3-1 record at the Fourth Annual Mel Berry Duals held at Beeghly Gymnasium on Saturday. The Tomcats notched wins over Penn State New Kensington, Penn State DuBois and Mercyhurst North East while falling in the finale to Baldwin-Wallace.

Five Thiel wrestlers registered perfect records on the day with Matt Lowry (Smithfield, Pa., Albert Gallatin) and Corey Brown (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) posting 4-0 marks while Alec Miller (Transfer, Pa., Grove City), Matt Butler (Burton,OH, Berkshir) and Will Ringer (Fredonia, Pa., Reynolds) all went 3-0.

Miller improves to 10-0 in his career at the Mel Berry Duals, but his streak nearly ended at eight. Wrestling in a tight match with Mercyhurst North East's Deandre Carter, he got caught on his back and couldn't have come closer to getting pinned. To Miller's credit, he found a way to fight off his back, eventually turning the tables on Carter with a pin in the third period.

Miller's turnaround was crucial in the 27-19 win by Thiel. If he gets pinned, the Tomcats lose by four instead of winning by eight. Even with the pin, the Tomcats needed wins by the upperweights. Andrew Riddle (Utica, Pa., Franklin), who went 3-1 on the day with three major decisions, cruised to a 9-1 win at 197, and Ringer followed with a 10-1 win at heavyweight.

Ringer's win avenged an earlier loss this season to Joe Welton. The loss came in an overtime rideout at the season-opening Clarion Open. Welton is ranked 10th in the junior college national rankings.

Lowry also defeated a Saints' wrestler listed in the JUCO rankings. He pinned 12th-ranked James Bennett at 165. Another ranked Saints' wrestler, Vinny DiGravio (ninth at 141) won by injury default over former high school teammate Jeff Marianetti (Ontario, N.Y., Wayne Central). The result had more impact later in the day than it had in this match.

When Marianetti's injury came back to haunt the Tomcats was in their loss to Baldwin-Wallace. Without him in the lineup they were forced to forfeit at 141, forcing a potential nine-point swing in what turned out to be a six-point loss. Brown, Butler, Lowry and Ringer all had wins against B-W. Lowry's win was a 5-4 decision over Korey Leonhard, who entered the event with a 17-7 record.

The loss to Baldwin-Wallace halted a 10-match winning streak by Thiel at the Mel Berry Duals, dating back to 2008.

In their 48-6 win over Penn State DuBois, the Tomcats scored bonus points in all eight matches that were contested. Brown, Butler and Riddle all had major decisions while Marianetti, Patrick Morris (Graysville, Pa., West Greene), Billy Roosa (Salamanca, N.Y., Ellicottville Central) and Ringer earned pins.

Thiel will return to action Friday with its first Presidents' Athletic Conference match of the season. The Tomcats will travel to take on Waynesburg, which is ranked 30th in the nation.
