GREENVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 5, 2010) – Washington & Jefferson defeated Thiel College, 21-17, in a tight Presidents' Athletic Conference wrestling match on Friday night at Beeghly Gymnasium. The loss drops the Tomcats to 8-9 (1-1 PAC) as the Presidents' improve to 7-3 (1-1 PAC).
W&J got off to a quick start as Zach Cecchetti pinned
Adam Householder (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Oakland) (Murfreeboro, Tenn,/Oakland) in just 35 seconds to claim the 125lbs match.
The Tomcats, however, would bounce back on consecutive major decisions by
Tommy Kozak (Belleville,MI/Belleville) (Belleville, Mich./Belleville) and
Corey Brown (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) to put Thiel up, 8-6. Kozak took the 133lbs match, 8-0, to improve to 18-6 on the year while Brown won at 141lbs, 16-7.
The Presidents' quickly regained the lead, 12-8, taking the 149- and 157-pound matches by decision.
At 165lbs,
Alec Miller (Transfer, Pa./Grove City) (Transfer, Pa./Grove City) got Thiel back on the winning track with a thrilling double-OT decision (2-1) over Brandon Roshon.
Brian Greenlee (Franklin,PA/Franklin) (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and
Patrick Morris (Graysville, Pa./West Greene) (Graysville, Pa./West Greene) earned a pair of decisions at 147 and 184, respectively, to give the Tomcats a, 17-12 advantage. Greenlee registered a, 3-0, win in his bout, while Morris improved to 7-6 on the year with his, 2-1, win.
W&J got a pin at 197lbs and a decision at 285 to carry the day.
Thiel's four seniors: Hogan,
Jeff Langdon (North East, Pa./North East),
Ben Mellring (Utica, PA/Franklin) and
Devin Todd (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) were honored in a pre-match ceremony.
The Tomcats return to action tomorrow when they travel to Baldwin-Wallace for the John Summa Memorial Tournament.
