GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel trailed Hiram by just five points at halftime but struggled in the second half as the Terriers rolled to a 66-42 win in a non-conference women's basketball game Sunday at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Five points apiece by
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) and
Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) had the Tomcats within striking distance at the half. Thiel led 21-20 with less than three minutes remaining before the break before Hiram closed out the half with a 6-0 run.
The second half was a different story as the Terriers, who shot just 25 percent in the opening frame, made 47 percent of their shots and outscored the Tomcats 40-21.
Marisa Thomas led Hiram with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Cowan tallied 13 points, Chelsea Kovach finished with 10 points and Lindsay Buckner chipped in with nine.
Nina Gabrelcik (Niles, Ohio, Niles McKinley) was the only Thiel player to score in double figures with her 11 points. She reached her total with just four shots, hitting three 3-pointers and both of her free throw attempts. The junior scored eight of her points in the second half.
Leanna Yeager (Poland, Ohio, Poland Seminary) topped the team with nine rebounds while adding six points.
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) led all players with five blocks and had eight points.
Thiel falls to 1-8 with the loss while Hiram improves to 5-3. The Tomcats will play at Notre Dame College on Tuesday, Dec. 28. It will be the final non-conference game to prepare for seven consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference contests.
