WOOSTER, Ohio – The Thiel College women's basketball team fell to host College of Wooster 59-50 Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Nan Nichols Classic.
Sophomore
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) led the Tomcats (0-2) with her 10-point, 10-rebound effort. Junior
Chelsi Clark (Greenwich, Ohio, South Central) had a great performance off of the bench for head coach Angie Zeuch, notching 12 points and three rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Junior
Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio, Trotwood-Madison) posted nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Karley Walker paced the Fighting Scots with 17 points and seven rebounds. Kristen Swartz totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds while Jessica Wingen added 10 points and five rebounds. Wooster (1-1) finished the contest with a 48-39 advantage on the glass.
In a first half that saw five ties and eight lead changes
Jasmin Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Wilkinsburg)' jumper tied the game at 25-25 with 14 seconds remaining before Walker's jumper with just one second on the clock gave Wooster a 27-25 lead heading into the break.
Barzak's jumper with 6:23 to play in the game trimmed the Fighting Scot lead to three, 51-48, before the hosts closed the contest out outscoring the Tomcats 8-2 and securing the nine-point win.
Clark was named to the all-tournament team for her performance in the two games.
Thiel is set to take on Trine University (0-1) in the consolation game of the Nan Nichols Classic at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21.
