GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel's women's basketball team opened the season at Beeghly Gymnasium on Wednesday, falling to Pitt-Bradford 69-55.
Four different players reached double-figures for the Panthers in the win. Ashley Seidenstricker and Maria Costanza scored 14 points apiece while Whitney Cline and Hollie Rapp each chipped in with 10 points.
The Panthers broke a 4-4 tie early in the game with a jumper by Maria Costanza and led for the remainder of play. They held a 37-25 advantage at halftime and led by as much as much as 18 points in the second half.
A 9-1 run by the Tomcats midway through the second half cut the lead to 55-48.
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) scored seven of her team-high 14 points during the run. She started it with a three-point play and scored the final four points on two free throws and a putback.
Jasmin Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa., Wilkinsburg), who also reached double-figures in the game with 13 points, scored the other bucket.
The Panthers ended any hope of a Thiel comeback with a 14-7 run to end the game.
Thiel was plagued by poor shooting and a poor performance from the foul line. The Tomcats finished with a 30% mark from the field and made 16 of their 29 foul shots.
Nina Gabrelcik (Niles, Ohio, Niles McKinley) was a bright spot off the bench, making all five of her free throw attempts. She finished with eight points.
Barzak came up just short of a double-double with nine rebounds, including five on offense.
Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio, Trotwood-Madison) tallied eight points and three steals. Jones led the team with four steals and added a block.
Thiel will take part in a tournament at Wooster on Saturday. The Tomcats will take on the hosts on the first day and will play an opponent to be announced on Sunday.
