Greenville, Pa. (January 7, 2010) -- The women of Thiel College basketball fell at the hands of the Waynesburg Universtiy Yellow Jackets, 54-62, Saturday.
Sophmore forward,
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel), punished the visiting Yellow Jackets in the post, scoring eight first half points, to keep the Tomcats within striking distance.
The second half saw the backcourt combo of Kacey Landis and
Nina Gabrelcik (Niles, Ohio/Niles McKinley) heat up from beyond the arc, going a combined 5-for-6 from three. But, a late 9 to one surge by Waynesburg proved to be too much for the 'Cats to overcome.
The Thiel women had three players reach double figures as Landis leading the way with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while Davis and Gabrelcik weren't far behind, tallying 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore guard,
Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) contributed a game-high nine assists, six steals and five rebounds.
The women return to Beeghly Gymnasia Saturday, Jan. 9 for a 1 p.m. match up against the Grove City College Wolverines.
