GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College wrestling team made sure it took full advantage of its second and final home event of the season by going a perfect 4-0 at the 2009 Mel Berry Duals in front of about 500 fans at Beeghly Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Tomcats, who hadn't competed at home since November, downed WVU Tech, Mercyhurst North East, and Rochester Institute of Technology in convincing fashion, while Thiel's stiffest tilt of the day came in the form of a, 27-24, win over Muskingum.
While there were many bright spots for the Tomcats over the course of the afternoon, Thiel's Alec and Robbie Miller turned in some of the brightest.
Alec Miller (Transfer, Pa./Grove City) pinned all four of his opponents in the event, with three coming in under two minutes. The lone exception may well have been the match of the day. At 149 Miller seemingly met his equal in Robert Sams of Mercyhurst North East, dueling to a draw in regulation thanks to a down-to-the-wire point by Sams. Finally, at the 7:50 mark of the marathon bout, Miller forced Sams to the mat for the win.
Thiel (6-11; 0-1 Presidents') returns to action – and conference play – when it visits Washington & Jefferson on Friday.
