GREENVILLE, Pa. (Dec. 8) -- The Thiel College women's basketball team, down six to visiting Chatham University at the half and as many as 10 in the second period, survived to record a 51-48 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over the Cougars Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Thiel (4-3, 2-1) junior guard Amber Bodrick (Boardman, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Sophomore forward Jasmin Jones (Pittsburgh/Wilkinsburg) (Pittsburgh/Wilkinsburg) added10 points and seven boards.
Brittany Brown led Chatham (2-5, 0-2) with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Barb Petty and Lizz King added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Chatham led by as many as 11 (20-9) with just over five minutes to play in the first half before Thiel was able cut the deficit to six (26-20) going into the break. The Tomcats shot just 23.1 percent (6-26) from the floor in the opening half and finished the game shooting 32.8 percent (19-58) from the field.
The Cougars were once again able to extend their lead over the Tomcats to double digits, going up by 10 (40-3) with 12:23 to play. A 14-3 Tomcat run over the following 4:35 concluded with a three-pointer by junior guard Jena Cook (Brookville, Pa./Brookville) (Brookville/Brookville) that gave Thiel a 44-43 advantage. The Tomcats were able to hold the lead down the stretch to preserve the three-point victory.
Thiel will return to action on Monday, Dec. 17 when it hosts Pitt-Bradford. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
