Dan McMillen enters his 14th season as Head Golf Coach at Thiel College in 2023-2024. McMillen previously coached the Tomcats from 2008 to 2010. During the 2017 season, McMillen took on a new position as Assistant PGA Professional at Avalon Golf and Country Club in Warren, Ohio. McMillen will remain a member of the Avalon Golf and Country Club staff in the summer months. McMillen was the Assistant Golf Professional at Tam O’Shanter in Hermitage, Pa. from 2011-2016.
Under McMillen, senior Jason Thorp won the 2018 PAC Spring Championship and was named PAC MVP. Thorp is the first Tomcat to win a PAC individual title and be named PAC MVP since Bill Wadrose accomplished the feat in 2000 at Speidel Golf Club.
Before the 2011 season, McMillen was the club and teaching professional at the Greens of Greenville (Greenville Country Club) for 19 years. He truly is a homegrown product, having attended Reynolds High School, Greenville, PA, and then graduating from Thiel College in 1986 with a degree in business administration. McMillen was a four year letter winner on the Tomcat golf team. He earned all-conference honors his senior year.
Following a brief career in medical sales, McMillen accepted the position of Head Golf Professional at Greenville Country Club. He earned his “Class A” status with the PGA of America in April of 1996. Since then, he has provided individual and clinical instruction to hundreds of area golfers with a special emphasis in junior golf. He was the Head Golf Coach at Greenville High School for 19 seasons compiling a record of 182 – 101. A number of his players have gone on to successful college and professional careers. Most notably T.J. Cooper, Duke University (1995 – 1998). McMillen has had 10 players, Kayla Langer, Alyssa Mondl, Matt Fiore, Bryan Smith, Jason Thorp, Jeff Jenkins, Cody Slevin, Alaina Harpst, Hayley Phillips, and Taylor Susany earn all – conference honors in the past six years at Thiel College. McMillen also had three players earn College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors in 2022-23.
McMillen still competes annually in the Tri-State Section of the local PGA. Through his competitive and exhibition experience, Dan has played alongside such notable professional golfers as Fuzzy Zoeller, Scott Verplank, Blaine McCallister, Mark Brooks, John Cook and Natalie Gulbis. Dan received the Tri State PGA’s “Bill Strausbaugh Award” in 2013 for his commitment to the game of golf and the golf business.
McMillen has the distinction of being the first PGA Professional to record two hole-in-ones on the same hole in the same day. That occurred on March 12, 2007 at the King and the Bear Golf Club in St. Augustine, FL.
Dan and his wife Kim ’87 reside in Greenville with their loyal golden retrievers Rylee and Rudy.
