Thomas More Edges Women’s Tennis, 5-4

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Thiel women's tennis team was narrowly defeated 5-4 by Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More in a match Sunday at Notre Dame Academy.

The Tomcats had a 2-1 lead after doubles play concluded, as Shay Kashey (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) and Lauren Mittner (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) picked up a win at number one doubles, 8-3. The freshmen duo of Sara Matczak (Erie, Pa./Fairview) and Lauren Wolfe (Anita, Pa./Punxsutawney) improved to 3-0 at number three doubles, winning comfortably, 8-2.

After three flights of singles play, the Tomcats still held a narrow 4-3 lead. However, the Saints responded by picking up wins at number five and six singles to procure the 5-4 conference win.

Sophomore Lauren Mittner (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) and freshman Sara Mataczak swept their respective matches without dropping a set. Mittner won 6-4, 6-0 at number two singles, while Matczak won her match in the No. 3 position to put the Tomcats one win from securing the overall victory. The Saints, however, were up to the task and, with wins from Anna Hetzer, Melissa McMullen, and Madison White, pulled out the narrow win.

Thiel next hits the courts at home on Sept. 10 against the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College at 3:30 p.m.
