HUNTINGDON, Pa. — After falling 0-3 to Nazareth College in their first game of the Juniata College Tournament, the Tomcats split a pair of games on day two, defeating Lancaster Bible College in straight sets before falling to second-ranked Springfield College 0-3.
In the first contest of the day, the Tomcats defeated Lancaster Bible College 3-0, taking sets by scores of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-18. The Tomcats used a balanced attacked with four players registering at least six kills apiece.
Andrew Pohlod (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and
John Turner (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) each notched eight, with
Dante McCoy (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) adding seven and
Evan Proksell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) scoring six kills.
Corey Hamilton (Meadville, Pa./Maplewood) spread the ball around nicely to all attackers, as he accrued 33 assists over the course of the contest. Defensively, Thiel was led by
Ian Phillips (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) who totaled 16 digs.
In the second contest of the day, the Tomcats faced possibly one of their toughest opponents of the season, as they were defeated by Springfield College, who came into the tournament as the second-ranked team in division III, 3-0 with scores of 15-25, 15-25, and 20-25. Pohlod once again paced the Tomcats as he totaled eight kills on 16 attempts.
Thiel, who has already matched their season win total from a year ago at 10-7, will be back in action on February 29, when they travel back to Huntingdon, Pa. to take on the Eagles of Juniata College. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
