Brown Advances to Nationals with Title at Midwest Regional

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Thiel's Corey Brown (Greenville, Pa., Reynolds) will make his third straight appearance at the Division III national tournament, following his 6-3 win over Kenneth Richmond of Olivet in the finals of the Midwest Regional.

It's the first regional title for Brown, who finished second in each of the past two seasons. He will attempt to become the first three-time All-American wrestler in Thiel history, hoping to add on to his sixth -place finish in 2009 and an eighth-place showing last season.

As the top seed in the 133-pound bracket, Brown received a bye into the semifinals. He posted a 9-4 decision over Wabash's Marc Escobedo to secure a spot in the championship round. He enters the final event with a record of 24-2

Tomcat junior Matt Lowry (Smithfield, Pa., Albert Gallatin) didn't fare as well in his semifinal matchup with Wabash's Jake Moore, dropping a 10-8 decision. The second seed at 165 pounds, Lowry finished sixth, ending a great season with a record of 15-4. He had advanced to the semis with a 1-0 win over Case Western's Clay Criss.

Three other Tomcats came up just short of making the semifinals. Senior Andrew Riddle (Utica, Pa., Franklin) dropped a 9-8 decision to fourth-seeded Justin Leonard of Olivet. Sophomore Will Ringer (Fredonia, Pa., Reynolds) fell 3-2 to second-seeded Brandon Fedorka of Waynesburg. Junior Alec Miller (Transfer, Pa., Grove City) lost to nationally recognized and 30-match winner Thomas Fehring of Mount St. Joseph's, 7-4.

Riddle wrapped up a great career at Thiel with a fourth-place finish. He bested second-seeded Sean Jameson of Mount St. Joseph's in the consolation semifinals before falling to W&J's Robbie Mies. Riddle's career included three Presidents' Athletic Conference titles.

Miller finished fifth and ends the season second on the team in wins with a 22-12 record.

The national tournament will be held in Lacrosse, Wis. on March 11-12.
