William Harter was one of the greatest three-sport athletes in Thiel history. He achieved greatness in basketball, tennis and track during his tenure at Thiel, earning letters in each sport.
During his freshman year on the basketball court, Harter led the team in scoring, as we would continue to do for the next three years. Reaching his peak during the 1931-32 season, Harter was the leading scorer in the Tri-State Conference, which included Westminster, Grove City, Geneva, Bethany, Waynesburg and Thiel. During his senior year, he was the third leading scorer in the conference and was named to the 1933 All-Tri-State Second Team as a forward.
Harter captained the tennis team during his sophomore and junior years. He captured the Thiel College Championship each of his four years. Not a plyer to relax in the off-season, Harter also received a track letter in 1932. Topping off his outstanding athletic career, Harter received the Best Student-Athlete Award at the 1933 Tri-State Conference banquet, which was a fitting end to a fine collegiate career.
