William Crawford immediately began an outstanding golf career upon entering Thiel in 1968. As a freshman, Crawford was named all-conference and helped the team place second in the PAC.
During his sophomore year, Crawford played number one man, had a scoring average of 76.4 and helped the team place first in the conference.
During his junior and senior seasons, Crawford co-captained the team. He had a scoring opportunity to participate in the NCAA tournament each year, with a scoring average of 75.6 his junior year and 75.1 his senior year. He played the number one position and again helped the team place first in the conference each year. He was the PAC Champion his senior year.
In 1970, Crawford received the Outstanding College Athletes of America Award for his talent and ability.
