Roth participated on a Thiel varsity sports team for nine years during his time as both a prep student (1915-1920) as well as a collegian (1920-1924), playing his first football game as a 15-year old. He earned four letters in football while playing along the offensive line and one in baseball as a pitcher. Roth was the first player in school history to be elected by his football teammates as captain during both his freshman and sophomore seasons.
