Paul Saternow was one of the greatest wrestlers in Thiel history. Not limited to the indoor mats and headgear of wrestling, Saternow also competed in football and track during his college career.
On the mats, Saternow began his college career at 167-pounds as a freshman. Dropping to 158-pounds for the next three seasons, Saternow gained three consecutive conference titles while earning the Outstanding Wrestler Award in the conference in 1970.
With a career record of 45-7-1, Saternow and the Tomcats posted a 27-19 record during his four years. He captained the 1970 and 1971 teams. Following his outstanding collegiate wrestling career, he was selected as one of the Outstanding College Athletes of America in 1971 and finished third in the Eastern Olympic trials in 1972.
He was also a four-year letter winner in track & field. He won the conference championship in the javelin with a toss of 182 feet during his freshman year. Not one to stay idle during the fall season, Saternow competed on the football team. He earned three letters while handling the linebacker and punting duties for the Tomcats.
