Luther Kuder captained Thiel’s first basketball team in 1915. He was an outstanding basketball player, well-known for his extensive knowledge of the game and exceptional left hand hook shot. He led the basketball team during the 1916-17 season, being heralded as one of the classiest players in the area. He also played football in 1916 and 1917 as offensive end.
Kuder graduated Thiel in 1919 after returning from his service in the U.S. Army. He played semi-professional basketball with the Greenville Collegians. His ability won him a position with the New York Nationals professional basketball team as they toured the area.
Luther was asked by Thiel College to coach the women’s basketball team of 1925-26 and his star shone once more. The “Golden Phantoms,” as they came to be known, went through a 13 game schedule undefeated and were considered the finest team in the East. Among their victories were triumphs over the University of Pittsburgh and Temple.
