Laverne Kline earned three letters as a member of the football team and three letters as a member of the baseball team. He played both offensively and defensively for the Tomcats and was named to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Coaches Small College All-Star Team as a senior. He was a Delta Sigma Phi National All-Star First Team selection, which was comprised of players from each division throughout the nation. Thiel put together a 16-5 record during Kline’s tenure.
Also a very talented player at the high school level, Kline was an end on the 1950 Butler High School team, the last Golden Tornado to achieve a perfect season. He was inducted into the Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
