Joseph Scafuri began his football career at Thiel as an offensive lineman, but made the switch his freshman year to offesnvie backfield and became one of the premier runners in Tomcat history.
Although the Tomcats had a rough season with a 1-5 record, Scafuri gave some hope for the future as he scored a touchdown in Thiel’s lone win of the season, 25-9 over archrival Allegheny.
Over the next three seasons, Scafuri was mainstay that could not be bumped from the lineup. During a memorable sophomore season, he scored a then-Thiel record of 66 points to lead the Little 15 in scoring while rushing for another Thiel record of 726 yards, which stood for several years.
For his efforts during the season, Scafuri was named to the All-District First Team and was an All-State Honorable Mention selection. He finished his career with a 17-10 record.
A two-year letter winner on the baseball diamond and a basketball player during his freshman year, Scafuri will be long remembered for his heroics on the football field as the offensive lineman who said “I can.”
