John Piai earned four letters in both football and baseball. In his four years of football, he was a starting offensive end for three years and a starter on defense for four years. During his three years at offensive end, he led the team in pass receptions. In his senior year, he was appointed co-captain.
During his four years in baseball, he was a starting pitcher. He also played center first and first base. He was captain of the team in 1957, when he led the team in pitching victories and batting average. In the spring of 1957, Piai was honored as the Male Thiel Athlete of the Year.
In 1962, Piai became the head football coach of Chagrin Falls High School. He guided his team to a spotless 18-0 record during his first two seasons. His career record of 175-107-3 includes two East County championships, six Chagrin Valley conference titles and four undefeated seasons.
His honors include:
1972 – Greater Cleveland Coach of the Year
1986 – The Ohio High School Football Coaches Award
1987 – The Cleveland Touchdown Club – Dr. Lee Tressel Award
1990 – Mercer County Hall of Fame
