John Gibson set a host of records which stood at the time of his induction, leading for most receptions (150) and total receiving yardage (2,054). While in a Tomcats uniform, he accounted for 32 touchdowns and 202 points. Both marks stood until the 1981 campaign. Gibson’s best single-game showing came in 1969 when he scorched Carnegie Mellon with 14 receptions for 202 yards and five touchdowns.
As a sophomore, Gibson showed signs of brilliance as a pass receiver when he was on the receiving end of 47 tosses for 683 yards, which were season standards for thirteen years. The 1969 season found Gibson corralling 41 passes for 572 yards and eight touchdowns. He followed that up in his senior campaign with 43 catches for 589 yards and five touchdowns.
He was a four-time selection to the All-PAC First Team and the All-Lutheran First Team, along with four Pittsburgh Press All-District commendations. He capped his career by earning Little All-American Honorable Mention status in 1970.
