John Bernard Stoeber, Sr., more affectionately known as “Coach,” “Jack” or “Jocko,” came to Thiel in 1925 as a professor of physical education and director and coach of athletics. He became a legend in his own time and the architect of Thiel athletic tradition. Stoeber was line coach for the football team from 1925-1932, head coach from 1932-1955 and head basketball coach from 1932-1949. He also coached tennis, track, swimming, wrestling, boxing, soccer and cross country during his tenure at Thiel. In the academic field, Stoeber served as professor of physical education and German. He also served as the dean of men from 1949-1964.

In his 30 years of leading the Tomcats, he gained a reputation of being a tough opponent, a good sport and a fair-minded person. Among his many accomplishments were three undefeated football teams (1941, 1946, 1950). He also colored the scene with his personality and philosophy. The influences he had on young lives are innumerable. Much of the alumni loyalty to Thiel College is closely related to their personal respect and love for Stoeber.
