Joe Frelick was a four-year member of the football team, serving as captain during the 1950 undefeated season. The team went 7-0, surrendering only 11 points during the season. Frelick played on both sides of the ball, taking handoffs as a running back and intercepting passes as a defensive back. He was also responsible for calling the plays in the offensive huddle and handling responsibilities.

Frelick also played a leading role in creating the Thiel’s baseball program. In the spring of 1949, Frelick’s request was accepted by Thiel president Dr. William F. Zimmerman under one condition: the players would provide their own transportation and meals for away games.

During the baseball team’s first season, Thiel traveled to Duquesne University. Duquesne was a team vying for a national championship, riding a 13-game win streak. The Tomcats defeated the Dukes 2-1 and received major publicity from Pittsburgh media. Following this victory, the college provided all necessities to field a baseball team.
