A halfback, Massaro was a four-year letter winner and captain of the 1964 football team. As a sophomore, he earned All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) First Team honors, Pittsburgh Press All-District Fist Team recognition, as well as All-State and Little All-American Honorable Mention laurels. Massaro was the conference’s leading rushing in 1962 and 1963, becoming the first in league history to win the rushing title in consecutive seasons. He is still among the program’s top 10 in career rushing yards (1,862) and rushing attempts (454).
