Don McCright was a four-year letterman for football as an offensive and defensive back. During his Thiel days, McCright received All-District honors in 1956 and was the team’s top ground-gainer and scorer in his senior year.

In the four years McCright played for the Tomcats, they lost a total of only eight games. He recorded a then-longest gain from scrimmage, ran 82 yards for a touchdown, carried back a punt for 75 yards and returned a kickoff for 68 yards.

In 1972, McCright was appointed head football coach at Washington University. He also served as athletic director for two years. He had three consecutive players named to the College Division First Team All-American. Five players were signed to National Football League contracts. One of his star players, Shelby Jordan, was an offensive tackle for the LA Raiders on the 1984 Super Bowl Championship Team.
