Dana Spires was a four-year letterman and a two-year captain of the wrestling team. He was a four-time NCAA national qualifier. His third-place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships in 1988 at the 167-pound weight class qualified him as an All-American. He recorded a career record of 86-35, earning 20 or more wins three out of his four years. He finished his senior campaign with a 26-8 record.
In 1987, he was crowned the PAC champion at the 158-pound weight class. For his outstanding academic and wrestling career, he was named an Academic All-American in 1986. He was also awarded the Rich Luchette Memorial Award, an honor that is voted on by the wrestler’s peers and coaching staff and presented to each year’s top senior wrestler who demonstrates the necessary hard work and dedication of becoming a champion.
