Charles Scafuri was a standout in football and track, lettering four years in football and two years in track. Throughout his collegiate athletic career, Scafuri earned a reputation for hard work, determination and excellence. He was starting running back and linebacker all four years and offensive and defensive captain his senior year. In 1958, he was the leading ground gained in the PAC, averaging an amazing five yards per carry. He was named an All-District running back for three consecutive years.

In 1959, Scafuri was chosen by the Pittsburgh Press as the Most Valuable Small College running back. He was also named the All-PAC back and a member of the All-Lutheran All-American team. He represented Thiel in the Gem Bowl, a post-season football game which featured the best small college players in the East. He was the first student to receive the Barney Perifano Award for outstanding contributions to Thiel athletics.

At the time of his induction, he held the track record for most points scored in a single track meet. He was honored as Best Male Athlete of the 1959-60 school year.
