Cecil “Red” Patterson could be depended upon to make the necessary yardage and had an unbelievable ability backing up the line and stopping powerful fullbacks. His position as fullback kept him busy and he co-captained the team for one season. Patterson was also a starting member of the basketball team for three years, played baseball and participated in swimming.

Patterson began his lifelong coaching career (28 years) while still attending Thiel. After graduation in 1931, Patterson was a county champion baseball player (semi-pro) for three years. While teaching, Patterson coached football, baseball, basketball, softball and soccer. He played recreational baseball on are diamonds for over 30 years.
