Rory Duncan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) had a career day for the Thiel College men's soccer team as it defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny at home by a 8-1 score. Duncan registered his first career hat trick, scoring three goals on six shots. The win moves the Tomcats record to 5-4 on the season as the Lions fall to 2-5.
Duncan opened the game's scoring with a shot in the 5th minute after junior
Tyler Strite (Fayetteville, Pa./Shalom Christian) crossed a ball to Duncan's feet who put the shot past the Lions keeper. Freshman
Kent Baughman (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) scored the second goal of the match five minutes later, and Duncan added his second goal at the 25-minute mark to stake Thiel to a 3-0 lead at the half.
Baughman opened the second half scoring with his second goal at the 47-minute mark.
The Lions ended the Tomcats shutout bid in the 48th minute when Manoj Sharma scored past senior keeper
Andrew Hindman (Dunedin, Fla./Dunedin) to pull the visiting team within three goals.
Senior
Tanner Mesing (Freedom, Pa./Freedom) then struck in the 53rd minute with a header off of a pass that came from sophomore
Arran Robertson (Port St. Lucie, Fla. /Lincoln Park Academy ). Mere seconds later, Duncan scored his third goal of the match on a pass from Ray Hanzack to push the Tomcat lead to 6-1.
Sophomore
Conor Shanley (Penn Hills, Pa. /Central Catholic) and senior
Erik Gabrich (Baden, Pa./Freedom ) each added a goal to close out the scoring for Thiel.
Hindman made two saves in the net for the Tomcats, improving his record to 5-3 on the season.
The Tomcats will return to action on Saturday, October 1 when they travel to Point Park University for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
